Many times you will dine at a restaurant to find steak fries on the menu. They are long, thick slices of potato cooked in the same manner as french fries. Many Diners or restaurants will sell them for around $2 or so for a side order. They can also be served with a meal.
It really doesn’t make any sense to pay $2 or more for an order of steak fries that weighs approximately two to three ounces, if you were to ask me. However, you haven’t, but I will tell you why I think the price is just too much.
You can purchase a 10-pound bag of potatoes for approximately $2.50 to $3. With this same amount of money, not only can you make your own steak fries, you can also use the rest of the potatoes for other meals.
Another reason, I believe the price of steak fries is too high, is when you purchase a meal at any diner or restaurant you pay two to three times the amount you would pay to fix the same meal at home.
For example, you can fix a complete t-bone dinner for three for the price of one steak dinner at any restaurant. Three t-bone steaks at $7.29 equals $21.87. A bag of salad will cost about $1.99. A 5-pound bag of potatoes will cost about $1.79. You will only need half of the bag of potatoes. Which will bring the total cost of the meal fixed at home to $24.75. For another dollar you can purchase a can of the rolls in the dairy case for the bread portion of the meal.
Steak Fry Directions
You will need one and a half potatoes per person. You will cut the potatoes in half. Then cut the half potato in o strips the length of the potato.
You can make a flour and seasoning mixture for the potatoes if you wish. You can fry the potato slices just as they are too.
For the flour mixture you will need one cup of flour, a quarter to half of teaspoon of your favorite seasoning mix, and a dash of salt. Mix all the dry ingredients in a gallon Ziplock storage bag.
Heat the oil or oven to 350 degrees.
Place the potato strips into the Ziplock bag mixture and shake.
You will fry the fries until they are golden brown or until they start to float.
If you choose to bake them, you will need to bake them for about 20 minutes or until golden brown.
So making your own steak fries at home will be more cost effective than ordering them at a diner, fast food restaurant or fine dining establishment. Steak fries are also one of the easiest comfort foods to make at home.
Steak fries can be served with any meal you would normally or unconventially serve fries with.
